#6. Road Trip

If you could have a road trip that goes anywhere in the world, where would you go? What are the essential items you need on a road trip? A map? A planned route? A destination? Who would you bring along with you? In my drawing, I have an animal with long claws holding the map. Take a guess what animal is it?

Follow my steps to draw a fun road trip drawing!

You will need these materials:

  • color pencils / pencils / erasers
  • White Multi-media paper (9 x 12 inches)
  • A sharpened black color pencil to outline
  • Optional: rulers

Lets begin with a map!

#1.  There is a BIG map in the middle of the paper. Do not make the map too small or we cannot draw too much details in it. We want to draw four straight vertical lines in the middle of the paper (like rain falling down from top the bottom) but make the pencil stroke very light in case we need to erase it.

Use four pencils as guide to help you measure distance.
Draw 4 straight lines.
Draw two slanted parallel lines going down for the left section of the map.
Use a pencil as guide if you do not have a ruler.
Next, draw two parallel lines going up the hill in the middle section of the map.
Finally, draw two parallel lines going down the hill for the right section of the map.
This is what it should look like for the map. Make sure all your lines are straight, not curvy. Erase extra lines if needed.

Who is holding the map?

#2.  The next part is the character. Who is holding the map? I drew an animal with really long claws because my character is a furry wolf. Erase some part of the map to fit a thumb into the map. Color the paw of your animal if needed. If you want to have a human holding the map, draw a human thumb.

There is a human thumb and an animal thumb for reference.

All about the map!

#3.  I have land and sea inside the map. What type of map do you want to draw? It could be a streets map, a geographical map, or an aviation map.

For a geographical map, you can draw some lines to divide land and ocean. I drew my favorite land icons to suggest where we will visit during our road trip. There is an in-n-out burger icon, a hot air balloon icon, a bridge in the mountain, a zipline icon, and a car that has all of our camping supplies.

I have a dotted line going around the map suggesting our route. On the corner of the map, I designed a compass icon for directions. All maps should have a compass. I color the map with color pencils but I did not fill in all the space. I layered two different blue colors for the ocean to make the drawing more beautiful. Finally, I outlined the map with black color pencil.

Destination in background

#4.  As for the background, I wanted to keep it black by using only pencil. Think about where is your favorite destination? What do you hope to see when you arrived? Follow my drawing if you cannot decide. There are some houses on hills and some clouds in the sky. I shaded the sky with pencil smears and have dark shadings on the hills. In another example, I have sun rays in the background and some trees in the forest. Make your drawing simple so it will not take FOREVER to finish.

#5.  I hope you like this drawing! Share with me what your road trip looks like! I love to see your creativities! Do not forget to print out the reference for your drawing.
